“And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat”-(Mark. 6:31)
“When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, into which he entered and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place: for Jesus ofttimes resorted thither with his disciples” -(John 18:1-2)
It is very interesting to note, that Jesus took out time, despite his very busy schedules to refresh himself! In the John 18:2 passage, we are told that he ofttimes (ie, frequently; as the need arises) resorted to a particular place, to refresh himself, with his disciples. It was a place overlooking a brook and also had a garden. It was doubtless a place that served the purpose for the needed quietness by him and his disciples, whenever the pressure of labour was telling upon them. Judas knew about the place, but unfortunately misused this priviledged information he had.
We live in a world where things are, right now, going into pieces. It is surely not the will of the Father for you to also ‘go into pieces with the world. We surely require seasons when we ‘come away’ from the hustles and bustles of life’ and recover ourselves: Spirit, Soul and Body!
Also, at a time, when deep involvement in the Father’s business in attending to the needs of the people made it difficult for Jesus and his disciples to have leisure, as basic as time to eat, he took them on a retreat that was to serve the purposes of physical rest and spiritual rejuvenations.
Often times, God’s people do not remember that …”We have this treasure in earthen vessels…” (2Corin. 4:7). Many times, Captains of industries and even employees overuse their God-given bodies and slip into exhaustions which open doors for physical and at times, mental and emotional breakdowns. In some instances, a little break or leisure, in a proven spiritual and godly environment, could save from some lifelong illnesses.
Couples and families do require leisure and holiday. Marriage and family lives often come under great pressures and at times total breakdowns, which few days of leisure and holiday, under God, could save! Couples need to cultivate the good routine of being alone by themselves, where possible, without the children!
Servants of God involved with busy ministry schedules are not exempted from the hazards of breakdowns, where the wisdom of leisure and holiday under God is not applied. “…But wisdom is profitable to direct”-Ecclesiastes 10:10.
